SUMMARY:Afghan journalist receives award for international reporting
DESCRIPTION:The School of Journalism & Broadcasting at Western Kentucky University will welcome Afghan journalist Lotfullah Najafizada to campus in late September as the recipient of the second annual Fleischaker/Greene Award for Courageous International Reporting. \nNajafizada serves as the director of TOLONews\, Afghanistan’s first and largest 24/7 news and current events channel\, where he oversees a newsroom of over 100 media professionals in Kabul and news bureaus throughout the country. He has conducted TV interviews with many global leaders\, including former British Prime Minister David Cameron\, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani\, Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. \nIn 2017\, Forbes selected Najafizada among the “30 under 30” top media influencers in Asia. In 2016\, TIME Magazine named him a Next Generation Leader and Reporters Without Borders named him a Press Freedom Hero for his fight for free press in Afghanistan. \n“At 29 years old\, this year’s Fleischaker/Greene Award for Courageous International Reporting recipient\, Lotfullah Najafizada\, has already braved numerous threats while working as a journalist and as Director of TOLOnews\,” said Dr. Loup Langton\, the School of Journalism & Broadcasting’s former director\, who helped select Najafizada for the award. “We’re fortunate to have him join us to talk about the current situation in his country as well as the challenges and rewards of reporting from a country that has faced so much violence and uncertainty for decades.” \nNajafizada started out in journalism as a page designer at a local newspaper in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif. He later began writing and reporting\, which led to a job in the online department at Kabul-based media group MOBY. When the idea came at MOBY to start a 24-hour news station\, Najafizada was chosen to lead it. \nSince assuming the director role at TOLONews\, Najafizada has received threats from the Taliban for his coverage of Kabul affairs. In 2014\, the Taliban attacked several of his colleagues\, and Najafizada made the decision to continue reporting despite the dangers. \nThe Award for Courageous International Reporting is given by the Fleischaker/Greene Fund for Excellence in First Amendment Issues at WKU. The award ceremony and Najafizada’s presentation will be held at 7 p.m. CDT on Thursday\, Sept. 28 in Ransdell Hall auditorium on WKU’s campus. The event is free and open to the public. \nFor more information about Najafizada’s visit to campus\, contact Amanda J. Crawford\, assistant professor of journalism\, at 270-745-6407 or amanda.crawford@wku.edu. \nAbout the Fleischaker/Greene Fund for Excellence \nIn 2008\, Louisville attorneys Jon Fleischaker and Kim Greene created the Fleischaker/Greene Fund for Excellence in First Amendment Issues at Western Kentucky University. The Fund also supports WKU’s Fleischaker/Greene Scholars in First Amendment Studies Program\, which gives top students in the School of Journalism & Broadcasting the opportunity to take an advanced special topics class and brings nationally recognized speakers in journalism and First Amendment issues to the WKU campus.

DESCRIPTION:Living On A Dollar A Day: The lives and faces of the world’s poor.\nBy Renée C Byer \nAn interactive photographic exhibit that inspires people to create change with compassion\, education and action.\nThursday\, February 16 \nOpening Reception: 6:00PM MMTH Atrium \nArtist Lecture: 7:30PM MMTH Auditorium \n  \nMMTH Gallery and Atrium \nFebruary 16 – April 28 \n  \nSunday  |  3:00PM – 9:00PM \nMonday – Thursday  |  9:00AM – 9:00 PM \nFriday  |  9:00AM – 5:00PM \n  \nABOUT\nLiving On A Dollar A Day: The Lives and Faces of the World’s Poor\, is a powerful and extraordinary series of photographs and profiles by Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Renée C. Byer\, whose work illuminates the human faces of people who live in extreme poverty around the world. Traveling to 10 countries on four continents\, Byer sought out individuals and families on the brink of survival – living on about one U.S. dollar each day. \n  \nThe people in Byer’s compelling profiles share their hardships\, their joys\, and their dreams for the future with her. Often with little hope of changing their own destiny\, they dream of something better for their children. In her searing and tender images\, accompanied by stories shared by people whose trust she gained\, Byer gives voice to those who would not otherwise be heard. \n  \nBRING YOUR MOBILE DEVICE\nThrough her collaboration with A Fourth Act\, Renée aims to reinvent how we experience photo exhibitions by bridging the power of stories that build awareness and turn compassion and empathy into social action. By using an innovative mobile web app\, youbridge.it\, along with Renée’s photos\, the interactive photo exhibit can engage visitors to participate in an interactive and powerful experience that goes beyond raising awareness. \n  \nAs they walk through the gallery\, youbridge.it offers the photo exhibit visitors an opportunity to dive deeper into the issues behind the stories and makes tangible actions available at their fingertips. Byer’s photos are an emotional invitation to learn about the roots causes of extreme poverty and hunger\, and to take simple but concrete actions in 10 areas of social issues. A strong believer that positive change can happen; she encourages us to be part of it by shifting the language from problem-focused to a solution-oriented one. \n  \nTESTIMONY\n“This photography is inspirational\, and the reason I gave the money to the United Nations and to poverty fighting programs is [that] I’ve been all over the world and I’ve seen the hunger first hand. And it’s not a pretty sight\, and it makes you want to do something about it.” \n— Ted Turner\, on receiving the 2014 James C. Morgan Humanitarian Award \n  \nABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER\nRenée C. Byer is an award-winning American documentary photojournalist best known for her in-depth work focusing on the disadvantaged and those who otherwise would not be heard. Her ability to produce photographs with profound emotional resonance and sensitivity earned her the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography in 2007 and dozens of national and international honors\, including the World Understanding Award from Pictures of the Year International\, and Pulitzer Finalist in 2013. Byer’s internationally acclaimed book\, Living on a Dollar a Day: The Lives and Faces of the World’s Poor\, illuminates the stories of people living on the brink of survival\, and invites you to put an end to extreme poverty. \n  \nAn inspiring teacher and speaker\, Byer stirs audiences to see how unbiased photojournalism can raise awareness and affect change. Her compelling TEDx Tokyo talk\, “The Storytelling Power of Photography\,” received a standing ovation and can be viewed online. Valued for her critical insight\, she has served for eight years as a judge for the prestigious Days Japan International Photojournalism Awards.

SUMMARY:Mountain Workshops'16
DESCRIPTION:Each October\, a group of visual journalists set up shop in a different community in Kentucky to document life and culture in a way that is rarely attempted. Raw and live\, it’s all about the people and their stories\, not the institutions. It’s called the Mountain Workshops\, and dozens of students and professionals from around the country swoop in for a week every year to garner new skills and fresh inspiration. \nIt’s a crash course in visual journalism\, and the participants’ best work is published on this website. Selected photographs are also printed for a museum-quality exhibit\, and many of the photos and stories are published in a book that documents the town and its surrounding rural area. \nParticipants can choose from one of six options for the week. Photojournalism\, the original workshop at Mountain\, has always been a big hit\, but Video Storytelling is increasingly in demand. If you wish to increase your knowledge in other visual skills\, the Mountain Workshops can deliver. Picture Editing pushes a traditional skill set of image selection and book design into the digital age\, while Time-Lapse takes us into a fascinating world of compressed time through motion. The Data Visualization workshop probes the masses of abstract charts and numbers to create stories that affect real people. \nA special workshop for K-12 educators is hosted by Dataseam\, a Louisville-based nonprofit that provides resources for Kentucky educators. The Dataseam Teacher Track workshop is designed to help high school teachers looking to develop their students’ communication skills to tell their own stories. \nSix workshops held in one location\, in one week\, with a constant flow of new ideas and one-on-one guidance by the top professionals in their fields\, all add up to an intense five days of high-octane education in visual communication and storytelling. \nBe sure to watch the video at the top of this page which was shot in Frankfort\, Ky where the workshops were hosted last year.
